Characteristics of Human Communication

Communication touches all aspects of human endeavor. It involves anyone and a lot of things. All professions are engaged in communication, and all living things communicate in one form or the other. Non–living things also communicate. Communication involves how humans behave in creating, exchanging, and interpreting messages. It manifests in verbal and non–verbal forms with distinct characteristics. Some characteristics of human communication are listed below.

(I) It is dynamic.

(ii) It involves two or more persons.

(iii) It is ongoing.

(iv) There is an exchange of ideas.

(vi) It is a complete process that occurs at many levels.

(vii) There is a mutual understanding.

(viii) It is irreversible.

(ix) It involves the use of words and symbols.

(x) It is non – sequential.
